Our Mission

UBC Humanities in Healthcare (HIH) is an interdisciplinary club at the University of British Columbia with interests in health care at large. Through an exploration of the humanities, narrative medicine, and the social sciences, we hope to educate future healthcare professionals and foster discussion on patient-centered care. UBC HIH hopes to spark discussion on the often overlooked aspects of healthcare and bring together a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences all in pursuit of healthcare as a profession.

What We Have to Offer

  • Fostering collaboration among an interdisciplinary community of students

  • Introducing narrative medicine as a valuable new perspective to healthcare

  • Utilizing film, literature, and guest speakers to engage discussions on inequities and shortcomings in healthcare

  • Hosting social events to promote networking and highlight the vastness of careers in healthcare

Critical Thinking

  • Narrative medicine ia the practice of delivering healthcare with acknowledgment of socio-economic barriers, cultural competency, accessibility, and other individualized factors that can impact one’s health.

  • As an HIH member, you will have access to our members-only slack community, healthcare-related resources and volunteer opportunities, free or discounted access to HIH events, and the ability to join our Narrative Medicine Book Club!

Members are also able to vote and run for executive positions.

If you are interested in receiving updates about upcoming HIH events, you can also sign up for our newsletter here.

  • Nope! We welcome students with all sorts of interests. Whether you want to go into healthcare, help improve the system, are interested as a patient, or have loved ones who are patients, HIH can help you learn more about the ins and outs of our current healthcare system.

If you are interested in becoming an HIH member, you can fill out our membership form!
